The 801
House rules
A short list, and all of it is the same idea: this is a private room shared by people who chose to be here. Members and their guests are held to it equally.
-
Everyone here is 21 or over
Members and guests alike, with no exception and no discretion. Photo ID is checked at your first visit and may be checked again at any time. A membership obtained with a false date of birth is void and the dues paid are forfeited.
-
Your entry code is yours alone
Do not share it, do not write it where it can be read, and do not let someone in behind you. If your code is compromised, tell the lounge and a new one is issued to your email and your member area the same day. A code found in someone else’s hands ends the membership it belongs to.
-
Two accompanied guests
You may bring two guests. Accompanied means with you, in the room, the whole time. A guest cannot arrive before you, stay after you, or use your code. You are answerable for your guests’ conduct as if it were your own.
-
Bring your own
The 801 is a non-retail establishment. Bring the cigars and the beverages you want to enjoy. The self-service bar area gives you ice, glassware and somewhere to pour; nothing is served and nothing is sold.
-
Your locker holds your property
Whatever is inside your locker is yours. The 801 does not buy it, sell it, hold it for anyone else, or insure it, and does not open your locker except where the law requires it or the locker has been abandoned. If your membership ends, empty it within 30 days; after that the lounge may clear it and dispose of what is inside. Nothing illegal, and nothing the house rules ban, may be kept in a locker at any time.
-
Nothing is bought, sold or traded on the premises
Not by the lounge, and not between members. The 801 charges dues and nothing else, and the room is not a place of trade. This is not a formality — it is the fact the club’s standing with its bank and its phone carrier rests on.
-
Leave it as you found it
Clear your glasses, empty your ashtray, take your bottles to the right place and put the furniture back. There is no one on shift behind you.
-
It is a shared room
Keep the volume where a conversation across the room is still possible. No conduct that makes another member want to leave: that is the whole test, and the lounge applies it without arguing about the details.
-
Smoking is allowed here; drinking to excess is not
Smoking is permitted throughout the room — it is why the ventilation exists. Do not drive after drinking here. The lounge would rather call you a car than read about you.
-
What you see here stays here
No photography or filming of other members or their guests without asking them first. Privacy is most of what the membership is for.
-
The lounge can end a membership
For a breach of these rules, for conduct that puts others at risk, or for a false statement on an application. Access ends immediately and dues already paid are not refunded. This is rare and it is not done by text message — you will be told directly.
